IBA Alumni Club decorated resembling B&H
The massive promotion of British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) is going on at the IBA Alumni Club in the city’s posh area Gulshan. The former students of Institute of Business Administration (IBA) under the University of Dhaka are the members of this club. An investigation has found that attractive boxes and ashtray, marked with Benson and Hedges, have been decorated inside the club. The BATB is conducting its promotional activity by enjoying its corporate entity and member of the club. But the Section 5 of the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act 2005 (Amendment 2013) bans all forms of advertisements of tobacco products. And if someone violates the rule, a monetary penalty will be imposed not exceeding Tk 100,000 or a simple imprisonment not exceeding three months or the both.
This is a bad attempt from the BATB to promote its product by violating the law. All forms of tobacco advertisements are harmful for public health and they should be stopped now.
