“Following the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act 2013 and the Rules of 2015, we are to add pictorial warning on tobacco packs from March next”, Prime Minister, South Asian Speaker Summit.” Despite all the delay attempts by the tobacco companies, as per the speech of the Honorable Prime Minister, pictorial warning should be implemented by March 19 of this year. The Health Ministry should not pay attention to the deceiving statements of the tobacco companies and be active in implementing the promise of the Honorable Prime Minister.
In Lalmonirhat, government irrigation facility (Varind) is used for tobacco cultivation. The tobacco companies are paying the irrigation charges on behalf of the tobacco farmers. Besides, they are forming so called ‘Farmers’ Club’ to inspire farmers in tobacco farming. At the South Asian Speaker Summit, Honorable Prime Minister has said that a policy formulation aiming to control tobacco farming expansion and battling with food shortage is underway under the Health Ministry. For tobacco cultivation expansion and food shortage, tobacco companies are primarily responsible. It is expected that the law will follow the FCTC Article 5.3 to prevent the tobacco company aggression. Besides, Honorable Prime Minister has also said about the National Tobacco Control Policies and we believe that Article 5.3 will also be followed there. Overall if we want to stop tobacco use by 2040, tobacco company interference must be removed.
