ATMA stops Dhaka Tobacco’s cultural event

The local administration has foiled a cultural event organized by Dhaka Tobacco Industry (DTI) by the title - Akij Cultural Function with the charges of advertising on tobacco products in four upazillas of Lalmonirhat district. By violating the existing tobacco control law, on January 17, 2016, the DTI started preparing stages for the shows in the playground of several educational institutions in the district. The Anti Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) members, working in district level, informed the administration and the police instantly raided the spots and foiled the moves to hold the cultural events. The police also said that DTI is advertising its products with the name of cultural events in different parts of the northern region. Sources said that DTI has planned for 88 such events and have been successful to hold eight events so far in Rangpur and Nilphamari districts.
