Illegal BATB ads

British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) has been conducting its promotion in various public places by installing temporary tables and attractive boxes. The campaign mostly aims to promote the products in the form of informing the consumers about the actual price of their cigarette brands. Investigations have found that BATB is running such promotions over hundred spots of Mirpur and Dhanmondi areas in the capital and the activity is going on across the country. Investigations also reveal that the campaign will continue till the budget declaration in June next. Notably, the punishment for advertising tobacco and tobacco products, after the existing law, is a simple imprisonment or a monetary fine not exceeding Tk 100,000 or both the penalties and if the offence is found again, the punishment will be doubled. If such marketing policies of the tobacco companies go on, the government initiatives to control tobacco use in the country will be a failure.
