Jamil Tobacco’s Advertisement to Promote New Product

Violating the existing law that bans any advertisement of tobacco products, Jamil Tobacco is promoting its new cigarette brand ‘GURU’. To promote this brand, in particular to attract the potential young customers, the company is running an advertisement campaign which includes distributing appealing leaflets. But following the Section 5 of Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act (Amended, 2015) 2013 any form of activities related to “Advertising of tobacco products” which also refers that all types of direct, indirect or commercial activities to promote the product is banned. The penalties for violating the rules contain rigorous imprisonment for less than three months or a monetary fine less than BDT 100,000 or both, and if the law is violated for the second time, the fine will be doubled accordingly. Such ill attempts should be stopped to protect public health.
